History
Creation: Area code 869 was assigned to Saint Kitts and Nevis on July 2, 1996 and went into service on October 1, 1996, as the 180th area code in the NANP. It was created in a split from the original Caribbean area code 809 to give the federation its own dedicated numbering plan. A permissive dialing period during which either 809 or 869 could be used ran until March 31, 1997.
Predecessor: Before 869, numbers in Saint Kitts and Nevis used 809.
Mnemonics: The digits 869 map to letter combinations on the standard telephone keypad, yielding 36 possible three-letter mnemonics. Telecom regulators sometimes pick one of these as a marketing handle (e.g. ‘BHA’ for The Bahamas, ‘TNT’ for Trinidad and Tobago).
