Creation: Area code 721 was granted to Sint Maarten by NANPA on July 27, 2011 and went into service on September 30, 2011 when Sint Maarten officially joined the North American Numbering Plan after being approved for membership in 2009. Unlike the other Caribbean NPAs, 721 did not split off from 809: it replaced the international country code +599 (Netherlands Antilles), which is still shared by Curaçao and the Caribbean Netherlands. A one-year permissive dialing period using either +599 or +1-721 ran until September 30, 2012.
